The Two Pathways

Duale Ausbildung vs Duales Studium

According to Make it in Germany (the official Federal Government portal for skilled workers), Germany's training system offers two distinct routes — both paid, both recognised, and both leading to long-term employment and permanent residency.

Pathway One

🛠️ Duale Ausbildung

Vocational training — combines practical company work with vocational school (Berufsschule). Leads to an IHK or HWK certificate.

  • Entry level10th or 12th grade school certificate — no Abitur needed
  • Duration2 to 3.5 years depending on profession
  • QualificationNationally recognised IHK/HWK vocational certificate
  • Training sitesCompany (3–4 days/week) + vocational school (1–2 days/week)
  • Monthly stipend€620 – €1,200 depending on sector (increases each year)
Pathway Two

🎓 Duales Studium

University degree + company training. Studies at a Hochschule/FH combined with structured work inside a partner company. Leads to a Bachelor's degree.

  • Entry levelAbitur or equivalent university entrance qualification required
  • Duration3 to 4.5 years depending on program
  • QualificationBachelor's degree — sometimes also an IHK certificate
  • Training sitesUniversity/FH (lecture periods) + company (semester breaks)
  • Monthly stipend€700 – €1,500 depending on company (paid throughout)

Both pathways are equally respected in Germany. According to the Make it in Germany portal, vocational training has a high reputation in Germany — in many cases higher than in other countries — and is globally recognised. Employers in Germany actively seek candidates from both pathways. The right choice depends entirely on your educational background and career goals.

Step by Step

The Journey — 9 Clear Steps

Both pathways follow a structured, well-defined process. The steps below apply to both Duale Ausbildung and Duales Studium — with differences noted where they apply.

1

Profile Evaluation

We assess your education, language level, age, and goals. For Duale Ausbildung: school certificates and B1/B2 German. For Duales Studium: Abitur equivalence and B2/C1 German. This single step determines which pathway you qualify for and which sectors suit you best.

2

Pathway & Program Selection

We identify the right program — sector for Duale Ausbildung, or field and university/company combination for Duales Studium. The right match depends on your background, strengths, and long-term goals in Germany.

3

German Language Preparation

Duale Ausbildung typically requires B1 (B2 for nursing and technical fields). Duales Studium requires B2 or C1. We guide you on the exact level required for your chosen program and the best preparation approach.

4

Document Preparation

CV in German format (Lebenslauf), motivation letter, educational certificates, language certificates, and identity documents — all prepared professionally to the exact standard German employers and universities require.

5

Applications

For Duale Ausbildung: applications to employers and training institutions. For Duales Studium: applications must go simultaneously to both the company and the cooperating university — we manage both.

6

Interview Preparation

Most programs require an interview — often conducted online. We prepare you thoroughly: motivation, communication in German, professional workplace expectations, and how to present your background clearly.

7

Contract Signing

Duale Ausbildung: you sign a training contract with the employer. Duales Studium: you sign a dual contract between you, the company, and the university. We review every term — salary, hours, training schedule — so you sign with complete confidence.

8

Visa Application

With your signed contract, you apply for the Ausbildung Visa (or student visa for Duales Studium) at the German embassy. We prepare all documents, review your application, and guide you through the embassy process — minimising errors.

9

Arrival & Start

After arrival: Anmeldung (city registration), bank account, health insurance, and meeting your employer and/or university. You begin your training — building real skills, earning a salary, and working toward a long-term career and permanent residency in Germany.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Duale Ausbildung is vocational training — you train in a company and attend a vocational school (Berufsschule), earning an IHK/HWK certificate. It requires a school leaving certificate (10th or 12th grade) and no university degree. Duales Studium is a university-level program — you study at a German Hochschule or university of applied sciences while training inside a company, earning a full Bachelor's degree. It requires the equivalent of German Abitur. Both pay you during training and lead to employment and permanent residency in Germany.
You need the equivalent of German Abitur — a higher secondary school leaving certificate that qualifies you for university entry (Hochschulreife). This is different from a standard 10th or 12th grade certificate. The exact equivalence of your qualification depends on your home country. Skillbrücke assesses this for you — and advises whether your certificates qualify for Duales Studium or Duale Ausbildung.
Both pathways pay you during training. For Duale Ausbildung, monthly stipends range from approximately €620 (hospitality, culinary) to €1,200 (nursing), depending on sector and employer, and increase each training year. For Duales Studium, companies typically pay €700 to €1,500 per month. After completing your program and entering full-time employment, salaries rise significantly — typically €2,000–€4,500+ per month depending on field and location.
Yes. According to the German Federal Government's Make it in Germany portal, Germany's vocational training system has a high international reputation — in many cases higher than in other countries. IHK and HWK certificates from Duale Ausbildung are nationally recognised across Germany and known internationally for quality. Duales Studium leads to an accredited Bachelor's degree, which is fully internationally transferable. Both qualifications significantly increase employability in Germany and the EU.
Yes — Duales Studium programs in Germany are open to international candidates. According to DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service), you need a secondary school leaving certificate equivalent to the German Abitur or Fachabitur, and German language skills at B2 or C1 level. You apply simultaneously to the company offering the dual study placement and to the cooperating university. Skillbrücke assesses your qualification equivalence and guides you through the full dual application process.
The full timeline depends on your current German language level and the application cycle for your chosen sector. In general: language preparation can take 3–12 months to reach B1 or B2. Document preparation, applications, and interviews typically take 2–4 months. Visa processing usually takes 4–12 weeks after submission. Most candidates start their training 12–24 months after first enquiring, depending on their starting point. Skillbrücke maps out a realistic personal timeline for you during the consultation.
Yes. Both pathways lead to permanent residency in Germany. After completing your training and working full-time in Germany for a qualifying period, you can apply for a settlement permit (Niederlassungserlaubnis). The exact requirements and timeline vary depending on your situation. Skillbrücke advises you on the specific steps and timeline for your case throughout your journey.
